We often see determination as a result of a monumental effort—the athlete pushing through a final stretch, the entrepreneur working all night, the student cramming for a crucial exam. But where does that unwavering resolve really come from?

Sometimes, determination is externally driven. We become determined to prove someone wrong, to please a parent, or to live up to the expectations of a mentor. This external fuel can be powerful, but its fire often fades when the source of that motivation is gone.

What I’m truly fascinated by, however, is the kind of determination that comes from within. It’s the quiet, steady force that arises from a deep, personal commitment to a goal. This inner resolve isn’t about proving a point to others; it’s about honouring a promise to yourself. It’s born from a place of self-trust and a deep-seated belief that you are capable of more.

Inner determination isn’t a single, uniform force. It can manifest in different ways, each with its own unique origin.

  • The Determination of a Quiet ‘No More’: This type of determination is often born from a moment of discomfort or pain. It’s the feeling of “I’m done with this.” It could be the moment you decide to leave a toxic job, end a limiting belief, or break a bad habit. For me, this is a huge trigger. I find my deepest resolve is often forged in a moment of frustration or discomfort, where I decide I am no longer willing to settle for the status quo. It’s a powerful catalyst for change.
  • The Determination of a Quiet ‘I Can’: This is the determination that comes from a small, internal victory. It’s the feeling you get after you’ve successfully completed a difficult task, learned a new skill, or overcome a small fear. This feeling of competence builds on itself, creating a quiet confidence that fuels a bigger, more ambitious goal.
  • The Determination of Purpose: This is perhaps the most sustainable form. It arises when you connect your actions to a purpose that is larger than yourself. When your work or your goals are aligned with your deepest values, determination isn’t something you have to force—it’s a natural by product of living your purpose.

A Moment of Reflection

I invite you to take a moment and think about yourself. What triggers your determination? Is it a desire to please others, a competitive spirit, or something that comes from deep within?

For me, it’s that uncomfortable nudge that tells me I need to do something different. It’s the feeling that a change is needed, and that I’m the only one who can make it happen. What is that feeling for you? What kind of determination drives you forward?
