Case Study 2

We asked a number of questions focusing on what things were like before and after the Leadership Coaching Programme.

“Investing now saves time in the future”

Before the leadership coaching programme

1. What were the main challenges within the team?

{

I spent a lot of time stepping in to fix problems which made me busy and stressed. I was struggling to hold people accountable within the team. There was also a lack of procedures within the team. We were all constantly busy and although deadlines were met, we were not necessarily effective.

2. What were your own challenges as a manager before the leadership programme?

{

I never seemed to have enough time for anything. I didn’t feel I knew how the business wanted me to manage the team, nor had I had any previous training or guidance. I felt myself and things within the team were very chaotic.

I also remember saying that I felt I didn’t have the time for the programme itself!

I hardly ever took time off and if I did the team were constantly in touch.

3. What have you liked the most from the sessions?

{

I have loved learning about how we all think and behave and how different we all are. I have learnt so much about myself, my team and my colleagues. This has had a huge impact on my communication.

4. What made the quickest impact to you and your team?

{

The models helped me see that I could quickly set some boundaries, not rescuing my team all the time and empower them.

I have realised that knowing yourself is really important when managing a team. I have found the models and tools we explored have made such a difference.

After the leadership coaching programme

1. What changes have you made within your team?

{

I could see that I had too many lists and I have made changes to how I manage my workload and priorities. The big change for me was ensuring all the team knew what they were responsible for and holding them to account. We changed how we managed the workload, and I stopped jumping in if work was not done. I stopped rescuing them and started empowering. We put process and procedures in place to ensure everyone knew what they were meant to be doing.

2. How has your role changed?

{

I get to do my role. I am not doing a junior/administrator role and I am managing my team. The difference is immeasurable.

3. What have you personally Gained?

{

I don’t feel like a failure anymore, I feel good at my job and am happy in work. A huge benefit is that I get to go on holiday and feel relaxed.

4. How would you describe your team now?

{

Amazing! We work together and all know what we are responsible for. We have healthy mechanisms in place to hold each other to account, deal with challenges quickly and have fun.

Something else that has happened across the firm is better relationships with other departments. We had been working in silo’s before.

5. How have you kept the momentum going?

{

We have daily catch ups, only 10 minutes but we shared wins, discuss any updates and tackle issues as a team. We have monthly meetings to go through the models we have been given. We do not invest lots of time, but we ensure the time we do invest is utilised.

6. What would you say to another manager who feels they have no time?

{

We have daily catch ups, only 10 minutes but we shared wins, discuss any updates and tackle issues as a team. We have monthly meetings to go through the models we have been given. We do not invest lots of time, but we ensure the time we do invest is utilised.
