An overactive mind can make life miserable. Learning how to stop spending time in your head is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. There are two main ways to do this – write down your thoughts and secondly, be in the present.
Don’t get lost in thoughts about what you could have, would have, and should have done differently. Mental stress can seriously impact your quality of life.
A great approach is to write down your thoughts. When we see them written down, it often changes the reality and their power. We can then organise them into what is in your control and what is out of your control. More often than not, the thoughts that dominate our minds are out of our control. And this means that we are less focused on what is actually in our control. So there lies the stress.
Another way to control your ruminating habit and negative thoughts is to learn how to present. Work on techniques that help us move our attention to the now. Having a change of environment can help, as well as getting outside. Here we can connect to the present moment by using our senses. We can start to notice what you can hear, see, smell, taste, and feel and this brings our attention into the body, the physical surroundings and therefore
out of the head. In the moment of stress, the idea is to reconnect with your immediate world and everything around you. When you begin to notice what’s around you, you spend less time in your head.
